Art Flea Canceled for Oct. and Nov. dates

We found out that on our Oct. date there is a marathon scheduled to run up the street from the building effectively shutting off access to the Art Flea during our open times. There are also major events on the Nov. 19th date. As we experienced unusually low attendance on our first Art Flea we felt it best to save our artists' time and frustration by canceling the Oct. and Nov. Art Flea dates.

We will hold our last Art Flea event on December 17th opening early with a pancake breakfast with Santa. Thank you for your continued support.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you are an artist that prepaid for Oct. and Nov. dates we will apply that fee to the Dec. date or refund your money. Please contact Rich at info@artfleakc.com.

We are gearing up the ArtsTech center to welcome back the Art Flea Market. We have gotten a few more tables, many new vendors, and a lot of curious visitors to our website. New this year we have added food vendors and new vendors bringing more repurposed vintage items, one of a kind clothing, glass art, cards and calendars.

Why do we believe in the Art Flea?
We are artists. We recognize that the state of economy is hurting creative entrepreneurs. We know that by working smarter, pooling our resources and efforts; collectively we can help to sustain local creative businesses. Also, the general public needs inexpensive access to the arts and cultural events. The Art Flea provides just that; a cheap venue, free parking, small business marketing and entertainment draw, and above all families can rub elbows with some of Kansas City's finest artisans.

We are now looking for commitments from vendors (at $25 per Saturday) selling arts, crafts, good quality vintage goods, music, and a select number of food vendors selling products priced from $1 - $50. Thank you for your support! We had an amazing turnout at our last day of the Art Flea. With approximately 700 customers on Saturday, ArtsTech and Storytellers Inc. would like to thank Kansas City Star reporter, Edward Eveld, for his wonderful article in last Thursday's Preview section. We now have a huge following of happy customers and 45 artist vendors signed up to support the Art Flea's return. In the Spring of 2009, Original Art Flea Market plans to host 40-50 vendors each Flea weekend.

ArtsTech and Storytellers Inc. are pursuing public and private funding to help offset the costs of marketing and payroll with the plan that the Art Flea will return in Mid April.

Hope for Change? Invest in Your Community

As we gear up to reluctantly spend our hard earned dollars on gifts for the holidays; let's keep in mind that those dollars we spend have a voice and power to uplift our community. Buying locally made products, especially products made from recycled or repurposed materials, contributes positively to the health of our neighborhoods.

The Original Art Flea Market, located at the corner of 16th and Holmes KCMO, was created by two small nonprofits as a means to support the KC Metro community economically and to provide resources for our local artists. ArtsTech is providing a large indoor gallery space for artists to rent a booth cheaply ($20). Storytellers Inc. is managing the event. Together, the nonprofits are investing those booth fees in marketing the Original Art Flea to the public, hoping to expand eastward the boundaries of the Crossroads Art District.

Every Saturday 9am - 2pm until Dec. 20th, over 20 artists are offering up unique handmade items such as clothing, accessories, jewelry, soaps and candles, and bringing in funky rare vintage items all priced from $1 to $50. The public is invited to this unique family oriented shopping experience for free to peruse the selections and find one of a kind gifts that are easy on the wallet. Items are under $50 but you can easily get a hand full of goodies for under $5.

$1 door donation is suggested and you will be entered into a raffle to win cool prizes. We will announce the prizes offered soon.

Local artists will be sporting their wares in a fun festival like environment. Snacks and beverages will also be available for cheap. Find all your holiday gifts and something for yourself!
